MediaWiki can support Markdown with an extension such as the following: * https://m.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MarkdownExtraParser
This will help transition into Markdown-based docs hosted on GitHub.

Currently there is no production-ready Markdown extension for MediaWiki: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Requests_for_comment/Markdown
The alternative solution is to add Markdown documents into the source repository, then embed them in MediaWiki using the following extension: https://github.com/JeroenDeDauw/GitHub
Markdown docs should be added directly into GitHub.
