#35 Fedora IoT bricked when treating hardware 'inappropriately'
Closed: not supported by pbrobinson. Opened by w4tsn.

I observed that it is possible to brick the sd card image when power is disconnected at a specific time at boot. Somewhere right at the last steps of the boot process. 1 min into boot on a Raspberry Pi 3B+. It's rather an uncommon issue but happened to me now and then.

I've only observed this in power-loss scenarios and only in the first minutes of the boot cycle. I'm not sure what exactly is causing this. If I have to guess the time-window for this might just be around a few seconds or less.

I've modified the image and I'm serving my own (private) ostree repo so take it with a grain of salt.

How to Reproduce

  1. I'm booting the system and disconnect power somewhere around greenboot and multi-user target.
  2. (might not happen) The system then boots one more time, something unexpected happens (couldn't get logs from that yet) and the system automatically reboots
  3. The yellow LED blinks 7 times, indicating that the boot image was not found and the system is bricked

System Specs:

Raspberry Pi 3B+
Latest Fedora 32 branch
Minor-modifications, so I can't yet rule out that they cause side-effects

Other notices

For a while I used commit=60 on the root mount point to give the SD card an easier time which from my experience might have increased this happening. Could be a wider window for this error to happen.

Might have to change the title.
