Hello @paolinsky ! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
Hello! A few days ago I posted a self introduction to "fedora-join" list https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/ZUQKA7ZBZPETCNOHETS5SUNMUVDH2MCA/
And I wanted to answer the "know each other better" questions here:
I have not actively helped maintain any opensource project, I have tried once or twice in the past but ended up leaving it for different reasons. Now I have some friends who constantly help opensource projects who had inspired me to try it again more seriously this time.
I imagine my place in a FOSS community as someone who can work close to the code, I am a programmer and I want to improve my hard skills. But, at the same time, I am a technical manager at my job, and I enjoy talking with people and mentoring newer developers, so I will be happy to help in that kind of tasks.
I have not used a mailing list before. For work I use slack and for personal projects and past times I use discord. I am happy using Element while I am a Fedora contributor.
I was a discord server moderator for a Spanish speaking software development community for a few years, we did not had any organized system, it was mostly helping organizing small events, answering programming questions and keep the order on the principal chat rooms, there I found out I like talking and helping people.
I enjoy coding, and I do not want to delegate the part I like the most of my job to anyone else, that includes AI, so I use LLMs only as "rubber ducks" to help me think about solutions for hard problems, to organize my thoughts and also to generate boilerplate code (For tests for example).
English is not my main language, and I want to improve my language competence, so I try to not use AI at all when I write or speak in general. But, if I am speaking about something particularly important, doing a report, or anything serious that a large group of people is going to see, I pass my text trough an LLM to ensure I am not making any spelling or grammatical errors.
My favorite LLM is Lumo made by Proton.
I want to start small with volunteering, but I know I have the time to spend a good chunk of hours each week.
To start I want to at least spend 4 hours every week contributing. And after I have contributed for one or two months increase it to at least 12.
