Welcome Camarman

Hello @camarman! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org
.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)

Get to know each other better

In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).

For example:

  • your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:

    • have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
    • how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?
  • your background/skills, for example:

    • community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
    • Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
    • non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
    • software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
  • your experience in communication platforms:

    • have you used mailing lists before?
    • what is your preferred real time chat platform?
    • have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
  • how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.

Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).

Hi everyone,

I am a PhD candidate in Physics working in cosmology, specializing in extensions of the LCDM model (LsCDM). My research has resulted in two Q1 journal publications, and I actively maintain several research-grade open-source projects that implement these models, including MDP-Ls and transition-dynamics-lscdm, as well as GTRPy and FFLocker.

I have been using Fedora as my main operating system for the past 4–5 years for all of my research and development. My daily workflow is built around Python, Bash, and the standard scientific Python stack (numpy, scipy, matplotlib, etc.), all running on Fedora.

I originally learned about Fedora during the COVID-19 lockdowns when I moved fully to GNU/Linux for my academic work and eventually settled on Fedora because of its modern toolchain, strong packaging ecosystem, and reliability for scientific computing.

I am particularly interested in contributing to scientific and numerical software packaging, as well as modern CLI tools (for example projects like eza). My goal is to become an active Fedora contributor and, over time, a package maintainer or co-maintainer.

Experience with Free/Open Source Software
I have been using and publishing open-source software for many years, primarily through my research code hosted on GitHub. While this is my first formal involvement inside the Fedora community, I am already familiar with open development workflows such as public issue tracking, code review, and collaborative development.

I see my role in a FOSS community as a technical contributor and maintainer, especially at the intersection of scientific computing, numerical software, and Linux distribution packaging.

Background and Skills
Operating system
Fedora Linux is my primary OS for all development and research.

Skills
Programming languages: Python (advanced), Bash (basic), C (basic)
Office software: LaTeX
Python libraries: numpy, scipy, sympy, pandas, matplotlib, getdist, astropy, pysimplegui, hmf
Version control: git
Packaging: beginner, but aiming to learn RPM and Fedora packaging standards

Non-software skills
I regularly write scientific papers and documentation in English and am comfortable explaining complex technical topics clearly.

Communication Platforms
I have used mailing lists before in both academic and open-source contexts. I am comfortable with Matrix and other real-time chat platforms. While I have not formally moderated forums, I regularly help others through platforms such as Physics Stack Exchange.

Time Commitment
I can currently contribute around 16 hours per week, with more availability once my current lecture load ends.
