#496 What's new for Fedora KDE 40 - Fedora Magazine article
Closed: Fixed by ngompa. Opened by ngompa.

This is a big release for us, so we need to make a dedicated Fedora Magazine article for it!

  • KDE MegaRelease 6: https://kde.org/announcements/megarelease/6/
  • KDE Plasma 6 Change: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/KDE_Plasma_6

Noteworthy to reiterate from earlier releases (firsts!):

  • Wayland from login: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/WaylandByDefaultForSDDM
  • Wayland by default: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/WaylandByDefaultForPlasma

Upcoming goodies shipping as updates in the summer with Plasma 6.1:

  • Color management beyond sRGB
  • Input emulation support for IPKVMs like Input Leap
  • Improved drawing tablet and touchscreen support

Also note the two deliverables we have: Fedora KDE Spin (kde.fedoraproject.org) and Fedora Kinoite (kinoite.fedoraproject.org).

Comment from Joseph Gayoso:

I would look at how the "what's new in Workstation" articles are structured and follow that.
If I remember correctly, a lot of the changes do end up being just the upstream updates to Gnome, but that's fine because they also make up the changes to Workstation.

This needs to be drafted by Sunday-ish to get reviewed and queued up for Tuesday on Monday.

I would propose the article ASAP using the instructions that @marcdeop linked to so that the Magazine team knows this is coming, makes time to review, and so we can start the discussion on publishing time. If this article for Fedora KDE 40 is happening, it should go out on the same day as the Workstation article. That's the kind of thing to confirm with the Magazine team.

I authored the articles for Workstation 35-39 (the one for 40 is being done by an Outreachy participant). Generally the articles I wrote were structured like this:

  • blurb introducing fedora workstation, small sentence signposting major things new in this release, “open GNOME Software or use dnf system-upgrade in the terminal to upgrade” (Fedora only recently gained support for OS upgrades through KDE Discover so this might be useful to mention?)
  • whats new in GNOME (mainly informed by look through release notes and feedback from workstation’s contributors)
  • some system-wide / under-the-hood changes that affect all fedora users (look at interesting user-facing changes in the changeset wiki pages)
  • some other stuff going on in fedora-land that might be interesting (including this section was controversial sometimes, it was argued it dilutes the focus of the article, but it might not matter as much for an article about a spin?)

Unfortunately I’m not available to write an article for Fedora KDE 40 but I hope this might help whoever does write it :)

There is an issue opened here:
https://pagure.io/fedora-magazine-newsroom/issue/265
for a what's new article that has been worked on by one of the interns. @aday has given some feed back on it.
Here is the link to the preview on WP:

If this helps you get started or you need to replace it we need to work on it fast.

@ngompa @joseph Pagure Ticket #284 opened to track this in the Fedora Magazine.

SIG members, please see my draft below. You can provide feedback either in a comment on the google doc or in this ticket. By tomorrow evening my time (EST) I will send the draft we have to the Magazine team for their review so that it's ready for release on Tuesday.

I know some people left comments in the google docs file. But I think with those comments it should be pretty good to go! Thanks @joseph !

Thank you for your feedback!
