#497 Kinoite 39: GTK theme defaults to breeze not Adwaita

Plasma applies the gtk theme "default" which is set to breeze.

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme
'breeze'
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme Adwaita

This causes missing icons and UI issues.

I dont know if this is on purpose, and normally there should be an "Adwaita" option. I think to remember that this was there in the past.

setting it to 'Adwaita' would avoid these issues. I think all necessary packages are installed, but there is no "Adwaita" entry in that menu.

The systemsettings panel there is not about icon themes, that's about GTK application style theme.

The icons panel show Adwaita as a choice.

Aside from the missing fullscreen icon, it seems to look as expected:

But it looks like we might have missing file references for that icon.

The conclusion from last meeting was that we would need to file upstream issues for missing/broken icons.

I just read this post about GNOME breaking KDE app icons

I find it strange that DEs in general mess with icons of other toolkits, as macOS and Windows dont.

Why wouldnt the best solution be, to always use the default icons of the toolkit? Especially as users of other KDE distros reported, that GTK apps use the Adwaita icons?

I dont know how serious this "Adwaita breaks the Freedesktop.org icon naming spec" is, and if it is done on purpose. But just using the default icons sounds like it would save a lot of hassle.

See this screenshow of how it looks in OpenSUSE, is it actually on purpose to not have an "Adwaita" option?

Yes. It is gone on purpose. Selecting it breaks KDE Plasma. It used to be fine before Adwaita icon theme started having stuff deleted in GNOME 44.

At this point, we just need to file bugs to have the missing icons filled in.
