There was a Discussion about the default editor for Fedora Server - vim vs nano and a request to discuss this specifically.

So we should discuss and decide whether we wish vim or nano as default.

As of IRC meeting Nov. 17, 2021
There was a lively discussion in which 2 views became apparent - vim is the tool of choice for system administration - It is a value in itself to follow the Fedora default design, and the skilled system administrator will switch over or overwrite via kick-start file.
A possible way to combine both would be to make the choice of the default editor customizable via optional installation items (current right column in software selection menu). These are to be updated anyway.
Agreed: Further discussion on mailing list

I think we should diverge as little as possible from the rest of Fedora. I think Fedora has shipped nano as the default editor since F33. Folks using Fedora Server should experience the same editor they encounter in other editions, and they have the same opportunity as anyone else to change that editor to something they'd rather work with.
A great place to explain HOW to change the default editor would be somewhere over here:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora/latest/
Because that knowledge would be interesting to ALL users, not just desktop, server, cloud, atomic, or whatever users.
Also, given the age on this issue, I recommend we close it soon.
Unless, I am mistaken. Both are installed on Fedora Server, it is just that Nano would be marked are the default?
I'm a vim guy, even though I'm just a homelab guy and not a paid system admin or dev-ops or developer. But as long as both are installed on the system, I'm find with having Nano as the default like the rest of Fedora.
I'm guessing Nano has been the default in Fedora Server? I doubt I would have noticed, since I often edit config files with "vim (filename)".
I'm fine with loosing this battle to be different. I also would like Fedora Server to be as close to the other editions as possible for the defaults. I would like like us to default to BTRFS, but I know, I know there are reasons.
I'm with @mowest on this. Vim gets installed on all of my systems (either by kickstart, or by my config scripts. I can't think of the last time I used nano, but since most stuff out there seems to be written with the idea that nano is the default editor, I think sticking with the rest of the fedora project would be the way to go here.
