#1100 provenpackager request: michich
Closed Opened by michich.

Hello,

I am Michal Schmidt and I would like to become a provenpackager.

You can see what [https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/users/packages/michich?acls=owner&acls=approveacls&acls=commit packages] I (co-)maintain. (Ignore the InfiniBand-related ones, as I've requested commit access to them only very recently.)

And here are some package [https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?list_id=1197104&classification=Fedora&emailtype1=substring&emailassigned_to1=1&query_format=advanced&bug_status=CLOSED&email1=mschmidt&component=Package%20Review&product=Fedora reviews] I've done.

Perhaps there's not many of them, but that's because I've been focusing more on development, debugging, and working with upstreams of a few packages.

I comment on a lot of BZs, do triage and debugging, not only for the components I maintain.

I am one of the developers of systemd.

My current primary motive for becoming a provenpackager is to be able to fix systemd unit files in tens of packages. I lightly reviewed the unit files that we ship and I found that a lot of them expressed nonsensical dependencies and/or used pointless cargo-culted directives. Reporting bugs for each and every one would be more work than just going and fixing them. Anyway, this is not the first time I thought to myself I could more effectively fix some bugs if I had commit access.

+1 because of the "primary motive". Also, I've skimmed over the bugzilla tickets for some of the packages and see replies in bugzilla. I have not visited any of the (old) reviews, because that would be more relevant to sponsor requests.

+1 Just please really think through the changes you'll made to the unit files as sometimes not obvious things might be there for a purpose of fixing or workarounding issues.

So even if only slightly in doubt please rather file a bug and discuss the change with the maintainer.

+1 from me too

I'm hoping you tell in the git commit message, how exactly the systemd unit file could be improved. So the respective maintainer is aware, what exactly they did wrong. I'm refering here to the "not obvious things" by tmraz above: Not so obvious for the maintainer themselves, but probably for systemd developers...

Thanks for the +1 posted so far.
tmraz & tomspur: I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

Congrats, you're now a provenpackager.
