#2223 gdesklets : exception to continue using python2
Closed: Rejected by psabata. Opened by sergiomb.

per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1738001#c5

I'd like keep gdesklets , because I still use "Quote of the Day" and still not found any replacement .

We track the Python 2 dependencies here: https://fedora.portingdb.xyz/pkg/gdesklets/
Could you check which ones are necessary? It seems that the critical ones are: pygtk2, gtk2. libglade2, pycairo, pygobject2, python2-numpy.
Check with their maintainers Python 2 plans for those don't conflict with yours. (If there's a bug like this one filed for them, that's a good place to have the conversation.)

Petr has asked you a question in that Bugzilla and instead of answering it, you've copy pasted it here. Please answer the question first, than we can help you with this exception request, which doesn't have all the necessary information now.

We can build gdesklets only with two BRs pygtk2-devel and gnome-python2-devel [1]
from [2] pygtk2 more gnome-python2 install as dependencies pycairo, pygobject2, gtk2.

[1]
f31 OK -> https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=1375456
f32 NOK -> https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=1375455

[2]

Could you please figure this out in the bugzilla?

FTR I'm -1 based on the fact that this is not a complete request.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1738001#c8 has a more concrete list of packages.

Considering that:
1. the dependency tree is huge and includes complicated packages like pygtk2
2. upstream project is mostly dead (5 commits since 2015)
3. there is no clear path for python3 support
4. a potential replacement exists and is packaged (conky)

I'm -1. It just doesn't seem worth it to pull in such a huge stack of packages for this.

Thank you for sum up

yes , Gdeskkets depends on gnome-python2-devel and pygtk2.

  1. upstream project is mostly dead (5 commits since 2015)

I maintain it

  1. there is no clear path for python3 support

Yes, no python3 in plans (I don't have time for it )

  1. a potential replacement exists and is packaged (conky)

I think conky is also dead upstream , it not worth to change it and gdesklets is more candy eyes

Conclusion if gnome-python2 and pygtk2 stays on Fedora 32 we don't have any work to maintain gdesklets for a little more time, until find a solution for it .
But if one package of gnome-python2 and pygtk2 will be drop on F32 we also can drop gdesklets .
IMHO .
Thanks

This is about F32, not F31. It is true that there's a bunch of packages using gnome-python2 and pygtk2 right now, but we have to start trimming this dependency tree, with the goal of removing them all. We can't keep packages just because there are other things which pull in the same obsolete dependencies, because then we would never remove everything. There's half a year until F32, and this is the time to search for a replacement.

I agree with zbyszek, if there is no plan to update the package to python3, then there is no reason for exception. It is just postponing the inevitable, and we already postponed it for long enough.

We agreed to reject this request during today's meeting, based on above-mentioned comments. (+0, 0, -8).
