= Proposal topic = List of packages that have failed to be rebuilt since Fedora 11, to be blocked in rawhide and kept out of Fedora 13.
= Overview =
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2010-January/129226.html The following 30 packages, with respective FTBFS bugs, have been open since the Fedora 11 time frame, and continue to fail to build. These are the oldest non-building packages in the distribution, everything else (over 8800) managed to build for Fedora 12 or newer already.

If these are removed, the whole list of RPMs to then drop looks like:
Removing awn-extras-applets removes these: awn-extras-applets-devel-0:0.3.2.1-8.fc11.x86_64 awn-extras-applets-devel-0:0.3.2.1-8.fc11.i586
Removing evolution-brutus removes these: evolution-brutus-devel-0:1.2.35-2.fc11.i586 evolution-brutus-devel-0:1.2.35-2.fc11.x86_64
Removing geronimo-specs removes these: geronimo-specs-compat-0:1.0-2.M2.fc10.x86_64

Removing xqilla10 removes these: xqilla10-devel-0:1.0.2-6.fc11.x86_64 xqilla10-devel-0:1.0.2-6.fc11.i586
Removing xqilla removes these: dbxml-utils-0:2.4.16-0.5.fc12.x86_64 dbxml-python-0:2.4.16-0.5.fc12.x86_64 dbxml-devel-0:2.4.16-0.5.fc12.x86_64 dbxml-0:2.4.16-0.5.fc12.x86_64 xqilla-devel-0:2.1.3-0.6.fc11.x86_64 xqilla-devel-0:2.1.3-0.6.fc11.i586 dbxml-devel-0:2.4.16-0.5.fc12.i686 qpidd-xml-0:0.5.819819-1.fc13.x86_64
Of these, xqilla looks the most interesting, being used by the growing-popular qpid work.
I'd like to propose the above list be dropped from the distribution, prior to Fedora 13 Alpha freeze, unless the package is made to build in rawhide before that.
= Problem space =
Removing packages which can no longer be built from source.
= Solution Overview =
Ensure the packages are never included in Fedora 13.
= Active Ingredients =
There is a qpidd-xml package which, due to its dependencies getting dropped, may have to be dropped or reworked.

Can we give provenpackagers some time to take care of these? I'll see what I can do to fix these, probably starting with the KDE-related ones (qtiplot, recordmydesktop, synce-kde).
I'd be happy if they're fixed by anyone, hence calling this a "candidate" list. Three were fixed overnight.
Turns out geronimo-specs is pretty central to the Java/Maven crowd, so that'll likely need to be fixed rather than dropped. See the ongoing thread on devel@. Nothing like the prospect of the grim reaper to wake people up. :-)
My concern with the provenpackager work is that I'm not sure I want effectively-orphaned packages in te distribution being propped along every so often; a clean break may be better. But if other things need them...
I agree with notting - much safer/easier to nuke them once they are abandoned - especially if they aren't in anything's dep list.
If there is no one to maintain them then they are worse than abandoned they are actively dangerous.
We orphaned all these last week.
Will block the ones that don't get picked up and fixed.
Do we need to do anything further here? Or shall we close this ticket now?
