#3114 Feature: cold boot and reboot to last user's session
Closed: Invalid by zbyszek. Opened by basmevissen.

Dear Fesco,

I would like to propose a new feature to increase usability of Fedora Desktop. Please take a look, I'm looking forward to your comments.

Fedora desktop systems are typically used by a single user. After booting and rebooting a system, the user is presented a login screen where they are typically only giving their password and then have to wait until their session is started and the startup applications are loaded

Proposal is to have the option to:
1) Cold boot the system to the last user session and startup applications started. The user finds their session in a locked state with the screen saver activated.

2) Reboot as cold boot, but without lock nor screen saver activated.

For 1) the use case is to have the system booted as far as possible without requiring the credentials. After giving those, the systems is immediately ready for use.

For 2) the use case is that when the user initiates and attends a reboot, the system is immediately available to them with the lowest possible waiting time and not requiring credentials to be entered.

For the implementation, I think both an "always" option and an "next boot/reboot" option should be given. The former in the settings and the latter in the interaction with the user when shutting down (applicable for the next boot) or rebooting (for the upcoming reboot).

This option would be a great addition to the password-less boot to a default user, as it enhances security at cold boot and for reboot only surpasses the entering of the credentials when the user decides so (e.g. when attending the reboot).

Hi Bas,

It is better to propose and discuss such things on the fedora-devel mailing list or on the discussion.fedoraproject.org forum. You will have a wider audience there. This tracker is mostly used to vote on formal proposals and doesn't not work well for discussion. I'll close this here before the replies have a chance to start flowing in ;)

The stuff that you propose is very much dependent on the desktop environment. If, for example, you think that the Workstation's gnome environment should do this, then please mention this explicitly and "tag" the appropriate working group.
