#3603 Add containerd package to Update Policy Exception List
Closed: Accepted by gotmax23. Opened by buckaroogeek.

Synopsis

Add the containerd package (https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/containerd) to the Update Policy Exception List.

Benefit

This will provide the most current releases for the containerd container runtime provided by the Docker community. Containerd is a well known container runtime actively integrated into Docker, Kubernetes, and other container-related ecosystems.

Adding containerd to the exception policy list will simplify package maintenance.

Additional Information

The containerd project provide active support for the version and most recent predecessor as well as a few long term support versions (LTS). The current release receives the most attention in terms of fixes and feature enhancements.

This would bring containerd in-line with the update policy exceptions other Docker related packages have been granted.

Fedora (possibly Fedora ELN?) might benefit from also having a containerd-lts package which would provide the most current LTS version for those situations that would benefit from an LTS package.

I see from https://github.com/containerd/containerd/blob/main/RELEASES.md#support-horizon that non LTS releases are supported approximately a year which indeed poses a challenge if a given Fedora release has to stay on a given release (as usually the version would land in Fedora before Fedora goes GA thus the version would be EOL before a given Fedora goes EOL).

As this package is often coupled with Docker/moby-engine and Kubernetes (both at runtime, no linking), I think it should be fine allowing it to move "slightly faster" than other packages to stay on a supported version.

Previous exception: https://pagure.io/fesco/issue/3394.

I see https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/moby-engine on the latest version for all Fedora releases but it is not listed on the exception page: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fesco/Updates_Policy/#_exceptions

Should include it as well as part of this request?

Ah, my bad, I missed https://pagure.io/fesco/issue/3602 which does the same for moby-engine.
