Zoned storage devices, as originally introduced with host-managed high capacity Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) hard-disks, have gained Linux kernel support with kernel version 4.10. Fedora 26 was one of the first Linux distribution to enable this support by default with Fedora kernel 4.11. As the upstream vanilla kernel support for these devices improved, Fedora support also improved. As a result, the latest zoned storage device type, NVMe Zoned Namespace SSDs, are now also supported since kernel 5.9 and Fedora 33.
Building on the base support provided by the Linux kernel, more efforts is now directed toward Fedora zoned storage overall ecosystem with packaging of user-land tools, development libraries, utilities and applications. The latest examples are the dm-zoned-tools and zonefs-tools packages added in Fedora 33 and 34.
This talk will summarize the current Fedora zoned storage support, what we have, what is on-going and what is still missing. Following this, future package plans will be discussed based on on-going upstream development in various areas, e.g. btrfs zoned storage native support, system utilities (libblkid, etc), Ceph SMR support with Bluestore, and RocksDB support with Zenfs.
This talk is intended to be informative for the audience about zoned storage devices and their use, but also seeks to generate an interactive discussion with Fedora developers for future directions.
In addition to the speaker, the presence of the following persons in the virtual room for this session would be helpful. Neal Gompa (ngompa) Josef Bacik (joseph) Davide Cavalca (dcavalca)
