Title: 5 lessons learned from 5 years of Fedora D.E.I. events

What is your proposal?

The Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Team loves events! Over the last five years, our team has run both in-person and virtual events, workshops, and sessions to promote the diversity of the Fedora Community and build awareness of stories and challenges by our community members. This session gives five lessons learned from the last five years we have run events in the Fedora Community. We will take you through the in-person events we have run like unconscious bias workshops and privilege walks, to virtual events like Fedora Week of Diversity and Fedora Mentor Summit. You may be surprised to know the one thing that all of our outreach and events have in common!

Who in addition to the speaker needs to be in the virtual room for this to succeed? This could be the audience you need to reach, other participants in the conversation, or other stakeholders. List each person by their name and FAS ID, as shown below:

  • Justin W. Flory (he/him) @jflory7
  • Vipul Siddharth (he/him) @siddharthvipul1
  • Fedora D.E.I. team members, spanning the wide experience of our team from the past five years

Who are you?

Name: Justin W. Flory
FAS ID: @jflory7
IRC Nick, if not FAS ID: N/A
Timezone: UTC+2 (CEST)
Availability for August 4-6th: Must be either a later time on Friday, or any weekend slot

For co-organizers in the D.E.I. team, we have a HackMD with brainstorming and notes.

CC: @siddharthvipul1 @jonatoni @amsharma @lilyx @mouse @spotz

Thanks @jflory7 for opening this one. It is indeed an interesting idea. Would you like to schedule a call between interested speakers to discuss further? Thank you

I am also curious if these lessons and experiences of organizing events have significant differences depending on where the events have been executed. It will be interesting to bring those diverse experiences on the table. Thoughts?

Hey Amita! We are using the existing D.E.I. meetings to discuss and brainstorm on this session. Our next meeting is on Monday, 4 July (although this is a U.S. holiday so I suspect it may be moved). I see you are added to the calendar invite. Are you able to join our next meeting to brainstorm with us?

Sounds like you mean geographic diversity? We have run Fedora Women's Days across four continents in their lifetime. It would be great to capture some of this detail in the session too. I'm all for it!

Could you please add a note to the HackMD pad linked above? That pad will be the origin point for our brainstorming and discussion in the next meeting.

Thanks @jflory7 for your response. Meetings (ahhhhhhhh.... ) my calendar is crazy busy so I am not too sure. But I will definitely make note of some points in HackMD pad, thanks for pointing it out :)

Ok, I added a sections "some ideas". May be let's discuss off-line?

You may be surprised to know the one thing that all of our outreach and events have in common!

Color me intrigued

@amsharma @jonatoni @riecatnor et al, here are some recent updates to our planning for the session. We have an outline put together. It would be great to get your feedback on the five suggested lessons and if you think we are headed in the right direction. Thanks!

Please review the following guidance on using Hopin as a speaker and leave a comment if you have any questions.

On the day of your presentation, login to the event through the link above and go to the "Sessions" tab on the left hand side of the page. Your session will be visible under the "Sessions" tab for 10 minutes before and after the scheduled time. Click on your session and you should have full rights to moderate and present. Click on the "Share Audio & Video" button. Once you see yourself on screen, you're live to the audience.

You may want attendees to join you on screen to ask questions or interact. If so, you can see attendees asking to join at the bottom of the video in the Moderator Panel. You get to choose who comes up on screen with you there by clicking the "+" button on each request.

While unlikely, if you run into any technical difficulties during your session, please write in the Hopin chat what your issue is and message me through Hopins direct messaging feature. Another admin or myself should be able to resolve your issue within a few minutes. You can also take a look at Hopins Knowledge Center if you have questions about how the platform works or have any issues.
