What is your proposal?

With the growing popularity of Rust as a programming language, especially for writing powerful command-line applications, GUI applications using the powerful GTK bindings, and even web services, more and more of those projects are getting packaged for Fedora. The Rust SIG continues to maintain and improve tools which makes creating new packages for Rust crates and their ongoing maintenance as streamlined as possible.

This workshop would include:

  • introduction to Rust packaging: how cargo concepts map to RPM concepts; contents and structure of RPM packages of Rust library crates and applications; why we don't use vendored dependencies
  • introduction to using rust2rpm: using it to create an initial package for a Rust library crate or application; updating an existing library; adding a compatibility package for an older version of an existing Rust library package; upcoming improvements that will make packaging Rust crates even easier
  • introduction to troubleshooting: how to spot missing or outdated dependencies; how to interpret and fix build failures; how to fix or work around failures in a crate's test suite
  • "live demo": updating real Fedora Rust packages (possibly one "simple" case and one more "complicated" case); initializing a new Rust package (probably only a "simple" case without missing dependencies, depending on time available)

This should give attendees a good starting point if they want to package their favourite new Rust application, or if they want to help with maintenance of the Rust stack in Fedora.

I have been a member of the Fedora Packaging Committee (FPC) for years, I'm serving my third term on the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo), I'm a long-term Rust SIG member, and currently the main maintainer of the Rust stack in Fedora, which now amounts to over 2000 packages.

If you will be presenting live, there will be a "Test Your Audio/Video" session in Hopin during the event where you will be able to test your system with Hopin.

Please review the following guidance on using Hopin as a speaker and leave a comment if you have any questions.

On the day of your presentation, login to the event through the link above and go to the "Sessions" tab on the left hand side of the page. Your session will be visible under the "Sessions" tab for 10 minutes before and after the scheduled time. Click on your session and you should have full rights to moderate and present. Click on the "Share Audio & Video" button. Once you see yourself on screen, you're live to the audience.

You may want attendees to join you on screen to ask questions or interact. If so, you can see attendees asking to join at the bottom of the video in the Moderator Panel. You get to choose who comes up on screen with you there by clicking the "+" button on each request.

While unlikely, if you run into any technical difficulties during your session, please write in the Hopin chat what your issue is and message me through Hopins direct messaging feature. Another admin or myself should be able to resolve your issue within a few minutes. You can also take a look at Hopins Knowledge Center if you have questions about how the platform works or have any issues.

@decathorpe Thanks! I think that the slides are now unavailable from Flock hopin site, though, the schedule link is no longer accessible, and the replay link doesn't include the slides link. So this is the only way, AFAICT.
