Our current spec uses %py[23]_build_wheel and %py[23]_install_wheel which have been deprecated in Fedora and are expected to go away in F45.

At the moment, it is unclear if we can migrate these macros to suit Fedora's requirements while maintaining backwards compatibility in our spec over all our platforms. We may need shift to providing multiple example spec files.

The spec file is riddled with %ifs anyway, so it's possible. You can use the %pyproject macros pretty much the same way starting from RHEL 9.
There is partial EPEL 8 support, but if you need to support RHEL 7 (and plan RHEL 8), it's easier to write the %if as 0%?rhel && 0%?rhel >= 9.
