try..except..finally not valid in rhel5 python. We have not quite dropped support for that yet

@mikem: It doesn't work with python26 package from EPEL?

ngompa. no it does not. too many missing deps. too much pain.

I've got fixes locally for the issues I mentioned. I've got them bundled along with patrick's other patches.
