AFAIK Whiptail has a built-in RTL script support, which is awesome on many environment with no RTL support such as text-based Debian installer or TTYs. But recently VTE added support for RTL languages and now, Whiptail is broken on GNOME Terminal, etc.

AFAIK there is no support in newt for RTL. That might be a Debian-specific patch. Can you reproduce the issue with unpatched newt and is there an example showing how it should look like?
You're right. I just checked the version in Fedora, The text alignment is wrong, but it is readable.
