Hi, an R maintainer here for Fedora.
I'm planning on modernize R packaging (see this ongoing work), and also this tool as part of that change.
I think it makes sense to move this repo to the R namespace here in Pagure, and I also think it makes sense to rebuild this tool in R. I assume you are not interested, so I'd like to take over the maintenance.
Happy to help anyway I can. I have indeed not been working with R much over the last few years.
That being said, to generate spec files, I'm inclined to think python is likely easier but that'll be up to you :)
Thank you for our quick response! Depending on the effort required, I may just adapt the current codebase for now. But eventually I would like to translate it. It just feels wrong that a tool for R is made in another language. :D Also it makes it harder to contribute for R users that may not be fluent with Python.
R2spec was there before but other languages went with the same idea, check https://pypi.org/project/go2rpm/ and https://pagure.io/fedora-rust/rust2rpm/tree/main :)
I have made you admin of the project :)
I see, I may keep it that way then.
Thanks. I'll keep this issue open until I get a good grasp of the project.
About the R namespace, do you know if it's possible to move the repo there? I don't see any options. No big deal if not.
I added you to the R group. Not sure if that helps. :)
Question: is there any good reason for maintaining an upstream R2spec.spec here?

I guess you are aware that my CRAN2OBS is indeed written in R.
I abandoned the original R2Spec a very long time ago.
May be CRAN2OBS would at least be a starting point.
I don't know anything about rpm beyond what I needed to get my tool going. Nevertheless, if you would like to cooperate on improvements or an alternative implementation I would be happy to help.
The main problem on my side are missing available time slots... A lot of stuff going on in life, even after work is done.
That said, I'd be happy to cooperate on a unified approach to create rpms from specs.

Pagure doesn't really have a way to move project. You can do it using the ticket and requests git repositories that store a copy of the DB info on disk. It works (or should) but requires to go cli, there is no way to do it via the UI.
That will help for sure :)
Thanks. I also have my own workflow for cran2copr with a custom spec template. My intention here is to align R2spec with the new set of macros and guidelines I'm preparing for Fedora's official repositories, where chaos have been building up, with packages that are very hard to maintain, so that it becomes harder and harder for me to update R itself every April, when a mass rebuild of packages is required.
So if this becomes useful for cran2copr and cran2obs, it would great, but it's not the main goal.
@pingou Overhaul completed. :) Could you please add me as a co-maintainer to https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/R2spec too?
I would say there's not much point with the upcoming forge changes; better to move it to an R SIG group on the new forge instead.
Done, I've also made you main admin there :)
All set then. Building the new release now. Thank you!
